Though over-the-counter remedies can relieve the symptoms of a head cold, home remedies may actually do more good. There is no cure yet for the common cold, but doing these 7 things will help you feel better:
Get enough rest: Your body’s immune system has to fight your cold, but it can’t do that effectively if you become tired. Rest allows your body’s natural healing mechanisms to kick in, and will make you feel better as well.
Take steamy showers: Hot showers soothe aching muscles and encourage mucus to flow, both of which are good things. Just be careful you don’t stay under the hot shower so long that you feel dizzy. If you feel dizzy to begin with, run a steamy shower while you sit on a chair nearby and take a sponge bath.
Drink hot liquids: They help relieve nasal congestion and soothe irritated membranes. Drinking tea with honey and lemon is a classic choice.
Blow correctly: Blowing your nose to expel mucus is important, but you need to do it gently one nostril at a time to avoid giving yourself an earache. Always wash your hands thoroughly after blowing your nose.
Gargle: Gargling can help relieve a sore throat and a dry throat as well. Try it with saltwater several times a day.
Put some heat on your sinuses: You can use a buckwheat hull pillow heated in the microwave or a washcloth wrung out in hot water. The point is to loosen and reduce the mucus in your sinuses.
Add a pillow at night: An extra pillow will help your sinuses drain rather than get even more stuffed up while you sleep.
Following these steps may not shorten the duration of your cold, but they will help your body heal!
