Instead of choosing the usual “Now you’re over the hill” theme for a 50th birthday party, why not make the event more enjoyable by throwing a “this is your life” party?
Allow plenty of time for planning and getting all the necessary materials together. Start by gathering photographs of the birthday celebrant from as many different times in his or her life as possible.
Then, when you send out the invitations, include a questionnaire for each guest. Ask them to write down their favorite memory of the honoree, the funniest thing they ever saw him or her do, the most memorable moment they spent together, and list several adjectives they’d use to describe the birthday person. Also ask if they have a funny story or a photo they’d be willing to share.
You can organize the answers on a video, in a slide show format or simply have the guests read them aloud. Whichever way you choose, this party will get everyone involved. You can also put the information in a scrapbook as a special gift for the guest of honor. There will be some laughs and perhaps even a few tears—but the memories evoked will be a lasting gift for all the years to come!
