Sometimes it’s easy to become so enthusiastic about ridding our gardens of pests that we wind up driving away creatures that can help increase our harvest by eating insects that love plants.
Here are five critters that are good for your garden:
Bats: Forget Count Dracula, okay? Many if not most bats eat insects or fruits and will not harm a human. Add to this the fact that the average brown bat can eat 1,000 mosquitoes in an hour and you can see why they’re good for us.
Frogs: Frogs and toads are also great insect-eaters. Toads love to eat slugs that feed on the leaves and fruits of many plants. Both frogs and toads like water, so adding a water feature to your garden will offer entice them to stay.
Snakes: Snakes make some people uncomfortable, but they, too, feed on insects. Snakes eat burrowing rodents as well.
Birds: Though some birds can damage crops, many birds prefer garden insects. Hens and chickadees both love insects, and hummingbirds help to pollinate plants.
Bees: While you may want to have an experienced beekeeper move a hive that’s too close for comfort, don’t try to destroy the hive. The world is experiencing a shortage of bees now, and we need everyone we can get!
