It’s a conundrum: How do you design a living or family room your family feels welcome to live in and still keep it livable for everyone? Follow these tips to keep your livable and still tidy enough for guests:
Add a wastebasket: Trash tends to accumulate when there’s no place to put it. Wastebaskets are often an overlooked commodity in living spaces because so many of them are unattractive. Remedy this by adding a waste receptacle that fits your room’s style.
Designate an information center: Add a chest or table sufficient to hold a two-drawer file so that papers, books and periodicals can be organized somewhere else than on every available flat surface.
Provide a paper bin: Sweep everything into it and sort it all out later. Have everyone put papers worth saving in files instead of on the coffee table.
Corral cords: Invest in ways to organize all those cables and wires that are so much a part of our lives these days. A cable caddy with capacity for several cables and a cable zipper, which encloses all the cables in a tube, work very well.
Organize the coffee table: Invest in one with a lower shelf or side shelves that can keep magazines and newspapers off the top. If you can’t afford a new coffee table, consider putting a couple of storage baskets underneath the one you have now.
Create a game area: A cabinet for board games and a table upon which games can be played will go a long way toward keeping the room neat, comfortable and presentable!
