So-called “age spots” are caused by sun exposure. They are only related to age in that the older you are, the more time you’ve had to expose your skin to the sun.
People have used remedies as diverse as lemon juice and lightening creams containing a host of modern day ingredients to get rid of these spots.
Now, they can be made to disappear through the miracle of photodynamic rejuvenation, a treatment that uses a pigment-busting Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) laser. The face, arms and legs of patients with moderate to severe skin damage from sun exposure can be transformed in only a few treatments.
Even better, by combining the IPL with amniolevulinic acid, a topical drug, doctors can now destroy abnormal and precancerous skin cells as well as those ugly age spots! Now, research shows that the nonablative fractional laser used to lighten skin pigment may be a remedy for precancerous cells.
According to Robert Anolik, a clinical assistant professor of dermatology at both NYU School of Medicine and the Weill Cornell Medical Center of Cornell University, patients who received three or four treatments with this laser experienced an 86.6 percent reduction in precancerous cells as well as tremendous improvement in skin tone and a reduction in fine lines!
