Don’t you just love those super stylish bookshelves you see in design magazines? Well, the bookshelves in your home can look every bit as good. Just apply a few of the pro styling tips below and watch your bookshelves go from boring to wow!
Don’t limit your shelves to books: Choose several of your favorite accessories—pottery, photos, vases or whatever bibelots you find pleasing—and intersperse them with your books. Mix shapes, sizes and colors for the most pleasing results.
Add some background color: If your bookshelves are built in, consider painting the back and insides of the shelves in a contrasting color for added drama.
Alternate the direction of the books to highlight the accessories: For example, you can place some vertically on the left side of a shelf, stack several books of the same size horizontally with the titles facing out, then position a second set of books vertically to create a niche that “frames” the accessory.
Don’t pack the shelves: Leave some spaces between stacks of books for photographs and collectibles. Use horizontal stacks as risers to display art work and other collectibles. Showcase a book with a particularly lovely cover by putting it on a plate stand so the cover faces outward and positioning it in the center of a shelf.
Group books by subject matter and objets d’art by color: Then “marry” the two. For instance, if you collect blue glass, set a blue glass vase on a horizontal stack of boots about glass collecting.
Hang art from front of shelves: Use decorative picture hooks or short ribbons with a bow at the top to hide the nail.
